Mesa's Speech and Debate Team succeeds at Fall Championships

The Mesa Speech and Debate team participated in the fall Championships at Long Beach State. It was the largest tournament of the semester.
The tournament included over 40 schools, including many four-year colleges.
Three out of the four Mesa competitors in the parliamentary debate novice division received top speaker honors in a field of over one hundred.
One of the novice teams also made it to the second elimination round.
Two junior division competitors from Mesa received three medals in individual events.
Coach Kim Gerhardt is optimistic about the future of the speech and debate team.
"The most exciting thing about this team is its tremendous upside, and we look forward to big things in the coming Spring semester."
Kyle Buckingham received an award for semi-finals debate team top speaker in the novice division. John Sabou won an award in semi-finals debate team in the novice division. Anne Jeri Skarboczewski and Brittany Givens received awards for top speaker in the novice division. Mike McHan was a finalist in the impromptu speaking and extemp-junior. Mauro Lara was also a finalist in the extemp-junior competition.
