Mesa, district to re-open Monday
Classes to reconvene after weeklong closure

The San Diego Community College District announced it will re-open all campuses Monday morning after a weeklong closure caused by several fires burning throughout San Diego County.
Chancellor Constance M. Carroll sent out a district-wide email on Friday at 12:12 p.m. announcing all classes would resume Monday morning. She did, however, advise people to check the district web site on Oct. 28 after 5 p.m. for final confirmation.
Carroll offered her sympathy for the situation.
"Our hearts go out to those who have suffered losses during this fire emergency," she said in her email. "We also have heroes among us whose efforts to help others have been admirable. We will no doubt be discussing this event for years to come and we will continue to learn lessons from it, both in our County and within our own District."
All district campuses and sites - including Mesa, City and Miramar - have been closed since Oct. 22 because of the poor air quality stemming from the fires as well as the possible displacement of students, faculty and staff.
The Mesa campus was initially closed the morning of Oct. 22 shortly after 10 a.m. Mesa Vice President of Instruction Elizabeth Armstrong sent a campus-wide email stating that the Mesa campus was closing for both day and evening classes. Check points were set up at all campus entrances and were manned by police to prevent more people from entering campus.
Another email sent by Mesa President Rita Cepeda at 1:13 p.m. confirmed the campus would be closed through at least Oct. 23. Just moments earlier, Carroll announced that all district campuses and offices were to be closed effective immediately.
