Mesa College Fashion Program delivers sheer Elegance and originality with ‘Golden Scissors’

Mesa College Fashion Program delivers sheer Elegance and originality with ‘Golden Scissors’

The San Diego Mesa College Fashion Program launched its 34th Annual Golden Scissors Fashion Show and Award Gala on Friday, May 8 at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina. This year’s theme was “Mother Earth” and its result was a product of collaborative work of Mesa’s own students as well as other local sources.

Susan Lazear, Head of the Fashion Department told us that the garments had been worked on since September, and that the actual production of the show had started and been taken seriously for about two months prior. “We have collaboration from City College doing all the hair and make-up and continuing Ed. We also have local sowing and knitting guilds involved, dance students performing in the middle scene, and a musician from the music program. Overall it’s a great energy and it’s all about collaboration and community” said Lazear

The list of collaborators goes even longer as 64 design students were involved, 11 advanced designers, approximately 60 student models and 15 dressers, just to mention a small portion of the event’s big production.

On the runway, showcased was great variety of looks ranging from Weekend Wear, Children’s Wear, Day Wear, Millinery, Retro Redo, Costume-Influenced, UnFabric Fashion, Evening/Special, Occasion and different collections fabricated by advanced designers.

Lighting, music, and overall stage design made for a great ambiance to the audience, and also matched each of the different collections as they walked down the runway. A great combination so each of the spectators could fully appreciate the looks. “I thought it was amazing, I really liked all the different looks that they’ve had and the different scenes and mediums” said audience member Mason Dyer.

Tiffany Williams, a model for the event said “I had a lot of fun and totally enjoyed it.”

The event had a remarkable execution top to bottom, and the theme was highly reflected throughout with the combination of earthly tones, patterns, cuts, textiles, and accessories. Congratulations to Mesa’s Fashion Department and everyone involved for a successful night and for supporting student career growth.

I am originally from El Salvador and moved to the U.S when I was 13 years old. I want to pursue a career as a Bilingual Reporter and International Business Entrepreneur, but for now I'm just going to school and working part time. This is my first time writing for The Mesa Press and I'm very much looking forward to it. I like running and playing soccer, and I try to learn new things everyday. My favorite place to be at is the beach, and my favorite type of food is Chinese!  I believe that creating good relationships among people is key, so that we learn to work with one another and expand our networks. I like to have fun and to be friendly and outgoing.
