Board of Trustees meets at Mesa

On Oct. 14, President Rita Cepeda presented the diversity and variety of Mesa’s educational programs to the Board of Trustees. She did this by showcasing students.

“It’s one thing for me as a college president to report on what’s happening at Mesa,” she said. “It’s quite another thing for them to see it directly, and even more importantly, to see it as presented by students themselves.”

At the meeting, among the more than 12 presentations, Mesa’s culinary arts students served hors d’oeuvres, fashion-design majors modeled dresses, and a grandmother and grandson-both Mesa students-spoke.

Some past Mesa students also delivered presentations. Anh Pham, Mesa alum, spoke about an award-winning biochemistry paper she co-wrote at UCSD. And Mark Medoza, Mesa alum, spoke about how Mesa helped him become the Executive Chef of the San Diego Unified School District.

According to Cepeda, the board meeting is important not only so that the board members know how there policies affect the campus, but also so that they can see whom those policies affect.

“They connect the dots,” she said. “They connect the dots very directly.”
