Toss out the relaxer with ‘Hair’itage

Learn how the 1960s movement helped redefine African American self-image and created a preference to a natural hairstyle during the San Diego’s African-American ‘Hair’itage: Self Awareness & Cultural Acceptance talk with Professor Starla Lewis on Sept. 13.

From 6 to 8 p.m. at the San Diego History Center at Casa de Balboa in Balboa Park, Lewis will explain how the movement shifted the preference from wearing chemically processed hair to a more natural style, and with it affirmed self and community pride.

Lewis is the professor of Black Studies at San Diego Mesa College and works tirelessly to expand the minds of students and to provide the community with the opportunity to expand their knowledge and understanding of the world around them.

The talk is free but attendees are asked to make reservations by calling Gabe Selak at 619-232-6203, ext 129 or by e-mail at gselak@sandiegohistory.org.
