The day of 9/11 2013 is a memorable day in the United States. On September 11, 2001 America and the entire world was shaken by the terrorist attacks that took place at the World Trade Center and Pentagon, where more than three thousand people died. This catastrophic event continues to weigh heavily in the hearts of Americans. With this occasion, staff and students of Mesa College gathered together in front of the Mathematics and Science building to remember the tragic and crime that took so many lives away and destroyed many others.
Early in the morning the Mesa College event opened with five marine cadets dressed in white uniforms performing a military salute. After that moment, Mesa College Vocal Ensemble conducted by Richard Chagnon interpreted “To Where You Are.” Chagnon announced that the song was dedicated to all the families that suffered the consequences of the attacks. “The choir will be singing the piece entitled To Where You Are to dedicate to all the families of the victims of that day,” said Chagnon.
Following this emotional moment Pamela Luster, the President of Mesa College, gave a speech.
She called on the audience to remember the spirit of cooperation that helped the nation through that grieving time in history, and to continue with the same spirit. “What I would ask us to do as a Mesa Community is to remember that in those times when we were challenged with grief and anger, that we turn to one another … support one another like so many Americans did that day.”
Luster also asked people to bless those who died and to bless those who are still suffering either from past injuries or because of a loss of someone special to those terrorist attacks. “I ask that we blessed those who passed away, I ask that we bless those who are still struggling with the aftermath of those days, whether is those men and women that have served in our military, those families that lost loved ones or those who have suffered from disease after being first responded to that terrific event,” said President Luster.
To close the speech, the President of Mesa College said “God Bless the United States of America” and asked everyone to have a moment of silence collectively in remembrance of all those who lost their lives in 9/11 and to those who are still suffering from the attack to this day.
