MESA PROFESSOR DEFENDS EVE

Mesa College Professor Sondra Frisch gave a presentation on “All About Eve—The First Feminist!” Frisch presentation is on how pop culture has morphed the Bibles perceptions of a good-natured Eve into a na’ve, dim witted Eve.

“Eve was framed and defamed.” Said Frisch, if you go into her office you would have figured this out by the door.

According to pop culture, it’s Eves fault that her and Adam were banished from the Garden of Eden. Eve was the one who listened to the serpent. Eve is the one who got Adam to eat the apple. Thus it’s all Eve’s fault.

Frisch presentation is based on what is written about Eve in the Bible and what other Scholars have written about on this topic.

Some of the miss consumptions Frisch talked about during the lecture were the apple, God telling Eve “No,” Eve being weak and why Adam ate the apple.

Everywhere you look there is an apple associated with Adam and Eve. But the Bible never mentions an apple. Pop culture took the word fruit and morphed it into an apple.

“And the Lord god commanded the man, saying, “of every tree of the garden you are free to eat; but as for the tree of knowledge of good and bad, you must not eat of it’ for as soon as you eat of it, you shall die,” it says in Genesis 2

God may have warned Adam not to eat of the fruit but there is no record of him telling Eve. She did know, however, she was not allowed to eat of the fruit, but God did not warn her.

Frisch points out that Eve added ‘touch’ to the list of things they were not allowed to do to the tree.

“The women replied to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the other trees of the garden. It is only about fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden that God said: ‘You shall not eat of it or touch it, lest you die.’ ” It says in Genesis 3

Frisch reasoning for Eve eating the fruit is she wanted knowledge, it was delightful to the eye and it was good for eating. The Bible backs up Frisch. The serpent spoke of knowledge to Eve.

“You are not going to die, but God knows that as soon as you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like divine beings who know good and bad,” says Genesis 3

Scholars believe Eve was not weak but had a thirst for knowledge. They believe the weak one was Adam.

St. Augustine’s opinion on the whole ordeal is that Adam ate of the fruit because he did not want to annoy the only woman on the planet.

Not all scholars portray Eve this way. Milton portrays Eve as a temptress and a schemer.

Milton believes that Eve manipulated Adam into eating the apple. She realized that if she alone ate the fruit then she alone would be destroyed. God would make Adam a new wife. Eve decided to manipulate Adam, which would result in other punishment than being destroyed in to oblivion.

Frisch started the presentation to change the warped impression she felt the majority of people have about Eve. From past students Frisch has designed a presentation not only to teach, but also to entertain.
