Common Course Numbering is a new revamp of classes. The purpose is to aid transferring students so that credits will not be lost. Many times when students transfer from schools they may not know which lectures and classes to choose from. This causes individuals to retake classes or even take unnecessary classes they do not need.
With Common Course Numbering it becomes much easier to select the correct classes. When students register for courses they will see a variety of options. For now, these are only general education classes, but in the future the San Diego Community College District plans to incorporate the new system into all classes.
“We looked at a way to minimize the loss of those credits for students so you don’t have to repeat courses because they are not sure if it’s the same course here or somewhere else.” said Vice President of Instruction Isabel O’Conner.
The new numbering system has benefited transferring students immensely. It allows for classes to be chosen more easily and helps prevent selecting the wrong courses. When picking classes for community college many students may have to choose lectures at different campuses too. This has also been an issue because some colleges don’t refer to the courses by the same name.
This is still a new plan being slowly implemented across SDCCD. It doesn’t affect the course itself in any way, and only applies to the naming and numbering of the class.
