Ode To K Sandwiches

The treasured and very popular restaurant that was K Sandwiches burst up in flames on a Tuesday night in August. It came as a shock to me as it did to everyone in the local neighborhood of Linda Vista, as this establishment was a huge deal and now sadly a loss to this community.

It was hard to even believe the devastating news that it had gone up in flames and the actual damage it caused, not just to the restaurant itself but to the Tran family who owns K Sandwiches and the community. According to Fox5sandiego.com The Tran family suffered a big loss 4 years ago when the founder, their uncle Hen Tran passed away. He left K Sandwiches to them and they have kept his legacy going since his passing. One can only imagine what they went through when their beloved restaurant burnt down to flames as it means so much more than a restaurant to them.

That day was very strange because I had just talked to my friend about K sandwiches. She just moved here to San Diego so I told her that K Sandwiches was cheap in prices but rich in flavor. I told her to stop by to check it out that day but she didn’t have time. That same night, news broke about the devastation that just occurred to K Sandwiches. To me, it was all very frightening and tragic for so many reasons. At the time not much was said about whether or not there were people inside, was anyone hurt? Nothing was really talked about, only the images were shown and it was absolutely heartbreaking. It really was a big loss.

Fortunately, no one was hurt physically but emotionally and mentally the Tran family was hit hard most definitely. Such a sad and tragic story and ultimately everyone loses in the end.

As a member of this community and a college student, you really feel for the family and all their hard work that went into keeping the family business afloat. You feel for the employees and as a customer you come to the reality that K Sandwiches won’t be there for quite a while to satisfy your craving. As a vegetarian, it’s generally hard to find good tasting food and as simple as their sandwiches were, they really were tasty. I loved their veggie sandwich.

That’s what will be missed from K Sandwiches, its simplicity and equally economically low prices but most importantly, the atmosphere it created. K Sandwiches brought people together.

The Tran family has said they will rebuild, until then, our K Sandwich craving will be left unsatisfied for as long as they take to rebuild. Best wishes to the family and we will await the K Sandwiches return.
