New trial dates set for fatal SDSU stabbing

After the deadly stabbing of Luis Santos at San Diego State University last year, the three men charged with murder are still awaiting trial. Due to scheduling conflicts between lawyers they will keep waiting at least one more month. San Diego Superior Court Judge Robert O’Neill rescheduled the trials at a hearing on Oct. 5.
Trials have been delayed to Nov. 5 for Ryan Jett and March 29 for Esteban Nunez and Leshanor Thomas. All defendants could be sentenced for various felony charges including murder.
In addition to the death of Santos, a former student at Mesa College, three other people were injured in the fight.
Defense attorneys claim the men acted in self-defense, however Deputy District Attorney Jill DiCarlo said the men were upset after being kicked out of a fraternity party and were actually looking for a fight when they came in contact with Santos and his friends.
During the hearing in which the trials were postponed, Judge O’Neill also lowered Jett’s bail from $1 million to $350,000. Jett is the only defendant still in custody; the others were released on bail. If Jett makes bail, he will live with his grandmother in Sacramento until his trial.
