The first building visible while approaching the campus after exiting the 163 Freeway is Mesa’s brand new parking structure. With its modern design and convenient layout, the structure is one of the college’s more atheistically pleasing features, but it may not stay that way for long.
According to Debra D. Picou, Supervisor of the Parking & Live Scan Fingerprint Services San Diego Community College Police Department, there have been recent damages to the new parking structure.
Although a certain amount of vandalism is to be expected in a public facility, the amount of graffiti appearing through out the building is abundant and consistent. The stairways and elevators are becoming unusable due to gates being torn from their hinges because people are swinging on them and because people are detaching the handrails.
With the campuses current budget for repairs, funds could soon disappear and leave the parking structure in poor condition.
There have also been a series of vehicle break-ins taking place in the structure. In a recent safety alert bulletin, Chief of Police Charlie Hogquist states that, “the thefts appear to be the work of an organized group of individuals and mirror a series of thefts occurring in the surrounding areas off campus.”
Hogquist also warns that the thieves are frequently targeting Honda vehicles and sends a reminder to students to “not leave valuable items in plain sight.”
If any suspicious activity is witnessed, Hoguist advises to avoid confrontation with the burglars and immediately call the campus police.
To report any suspicious activity, call the campus police at (619) 388-6405.
