Student safety awareness

Students using the crosswalk in front of the parking structure have undoubtedly heard the warning “Proceed with caution, vehicles may not stop” play over and over again in a robotic monotone.

The message serves as a constant reminder for pedestrians to be aware of their surroundings, but Mesa College students still fall victim to ambushes by careless cyclists or skateboarders despite these audible warnings.

Jack Doherty of the Mesa College Police Department would like to remind students that bicycles and skateboards are not allowed in the center of campus to protect both the riders and those in their way.

“We ask that students not ride bikes or skateboards on campus for both their own safety and the safety of pedestrians,” said Doherty.

The discovery of a murdered student in a City College bathroom last month reminded people that campus safety is about more than just dodging bicycles. The gruesome event left many questioning their readiness in dealing with an armed attacker.

Students in the San Diego Community College District can take comfort in knowing their district has the largest community college police department in the entire state. Student safety is also a key item on the agenda at Mesa College, which has a committee dedicated to implementing security measures on campus.

The site safety committee consists of more than 20 administrators from every region of the school. Members attend monthly meetings to educate themselves on how to secure their particular section of campus in an emergency. Safety officers are present during these meetings to recommend additional methods of protection.

Mandatory active shooter training exercises carried out by San Diego Police every six months are meant to prepare local cops for an armed assault on school grounds, but students can take certain measures to be prepared as well.

Don’t walk alone – find a buddy to walk with at night, especially when travelling around remote parts of campus, and be sure to stay in well-lit areas. In a life-threatening situation police recommend not making any sudden movements that may provoke the attacker.

Campus police officers are available 24/7 and can be contacted at 619-388-6405. Mesa College also offers a day and evening police escort service for all students, staff and faculty. For more information call 619-388-2749 or 619-388-6405.
