Mesa science professor dies

Former Chair of the Department of Physical Sciences, Professor Jerry Schad died Thursday Sept. 22 after a battle with kidney cancer that lasted a year.

Schad began his tenure at San Diego Mesa College in 1975 and became a full time professor in 1989.

He was a highly decorated professor, earning degrees in Astronomy from San Diego State University and UC Berkeley.

Schad vehemently mentored students and made many contributions toward education.  He wrote 15 books on various topics, which include health, active lifestyles, running, hiking and cycling.

He was survived by his wife Peg Reiter.  In the last year of his life he spent time hiking and traveling with his wife.

A memorial service will be held at 4p.m. at El Cortez in San Diego on Oct. 9.
