Starting the fall semester of 2014 incoming freshman of California Community Colleges will have new regulations to complete upon enrollment.
Only 53.6 percent of California Community College students achieve a certificate, a degree, or transfer preparation. These regulations were instituted by the Student Success Task Force to help incoming college students better prepare for a more timely completion of their college education.
A set of new requirements was passed by the System Board of Governors and was sent to Governor Jerry Brown for approval. The Senate bill is titled The Seymor Student Success Act.
One of the new regulations requires an academic visit to a counselor in order to become a student. Cynthia Rico. a counselor at San Diego Mesa College, explained the reasoning behind the bill.
“Research shows if they (the students) follow the right matriculation process they are more likely to succeed,” said Rico.
The matriculation process required upon enrollment is the following:
-Orientation
-Assessment: Test your skills in the subjects taken on the community college level
-Placement: Places the student at the right English, Math, Science etc. level for which they were assessed on
-Counseling: Visit a Counselor to figure out an educational plan
Mesa College student David Almarez has benefited from having someone help with his educational plan,
” I need to know what’s necessary to go into the Radiological Program and become an X-ray technician,” said Almarez.
