Every time the traffic situation seems to improve, Mesa students and faculty are greeted with another bumper. Construction has been the norm for the past year and it’s not going change any time soon.
As of now, the largest problem is the traffic delay created by a wave of students in the afternoon on Mesa College Drive, where the right hand lane has been closed between Armstrong and Ashford streets.
The purpose of the road construction is to move overhead utility lines beneath the street. Although the construction is being done by the city, Mesa administrators have been aware of the roadwork.
It’s surprising that campus police haven’t alleviated the heavy traffic by suggesting alternate routes away from campus. Two streets run parallel to Mesa College Drive, Beagle and Baltic streets, and both intersect with Linda Vista Road, as does Mesa College Drive.
A few directive signs paired with campus officers or an informative e-mail to students would have helped ease traffic tremendously.
San Diego Mesa College has been working for years to improve parking and traffic conditions so it seems odd that there have been no warnings regarding the roadwork.
It is understandable that attention has been turned to the H200 building due to flooding, but that shouldn’t close the lines of communication between the administration and students.
The construction on Mesa College Drive should be short lived, but Mesa students and faculty are in for a year full of demolitions, remodels and on-going construction around campus.
The I-400 building that used to house students services is to be demolished in March. Student services have been moved to Modular Village on parking lot 1.
It has also not been noted that the road running down the middle of parking lot 1 will be re-routed to decrease risk to pedestrians near the Modular Village.
Hopefully, students will be well informed of the ongoing changes on campus throughout this semester so that San Diego Mesa College students can be involved in the process.
