Hasten Relief in Haiti

Give a man a fish feed him for a day.

Rebuilding homes and farms need to be one of the top addressed items concerning the restoration of Haiti.

The relief effort has addressed sanitation issues in Haiti by bringing vaccinations for diseases such as measles, tetanus, and diphtheria as the first step to help Haiti get back on their feet.

Though, at some point the relief efforts will not be able to lend a helping hand forever. The estimated years until Haiti is stable will not be able any time soon, think at least five years.

So, teach a man to fish and he will be fed for life.

Countries will not be able to fund the relief efforts in Haiti. The United States is already in enough debt.

Haiti needs to be self-functioning but this will not happen through handouts. Other countries can’t expect that by providing food, Haiti will be able to reestablish a stable government.

As of right now, the relief effort needs to focus on building shelters for Haiti. There are too many Haitians without even a tent to sleep in.

A place to sleep will easily help with some of the sanitation issue. Shelter will give Haitians a place away from the elements, unexposed to diseases.

The longer countries and humanitarian organizations wait to make the push for building farms, homes, and hospitals, the more dead Haitians there will be.

Homes and hospitals will quell some of the diseases that have surfaced in Haiti within the last two weeks. The key for protection against diseases is to keep Haitians off the streets that are littered with waste.

Rebuilding farms will help supply the people of Haiti with a grander source of nutrients as compared to the ones they have available now. And a well supply of nutrients is the best foundation to fight disease.

Another issue that needs to be addressed is crime-There’s anarchy in Haiti and people are being kidnapped, robbed, and even murdered in the streets.

The Haitian police are working diligently to keep order but are not able to keep up. The United Nations should send backup to Haiti.

If the U.N. does send more security to Haiti, the relief efforts might go in vain. There has been news of mobs trampling over the weak in order to receive food from relief organization.

The police can’t protect everything, but the crime in Haiti is getting out of hand.

It’s not your typical math 150 Calculus class; it’s common sense. Reestablishing homes means reestablishing the Haiti government and hopefully better lives for people who live in Haiti.
