Seceding states unpatriotic

Americans all over the country are reacting to the outcome of the presidential election. Some are responding to the news of President Obama’s re-election positively, while others are not. Republican groups in over 40 states have filed petitions to secede from the United States via the White House’s internet petition platform.

Though state secession is not a likely outcome, the people calling for their home states to secede need to be reminded of a few things. Most of these sates receive more government aid than they pay in taxes. Most residents rely on the government for things like health care and retirement funds, not to mention basic things like the currency we use and national defense and natural disaster relief funds.

The people that are signing these petitions are claiming to be pro American and super patriots, but they are being the opposite. Republicans should support the members of their party in office, not abandon the government completely.

It is understandable to disagree with the outcome of the presidential election. It is not, however, understandable to be so unpatriotic as to sign a petition to leave this country that has given us so much. The thousands of people that signed petitions for succession should be ashamed of themselves.
