Culturize it: Nightlife and culture for students

Culturize it: Nightlife and culture for students

It is possible to enjoy nightlife in San Diego without all the drunken shenanigans and crazy dancing. Whether you lean towards music, art, comedy, film, theatre or science, one of the following events should catch your eye.

Anthology of euphony

Just looking at Anthology’s event calendar is overwhelming as they are packed full of talented musicians almost nightly. Their always-satisfying specialty is the house band that pounds out award winning jazz, soul and R&B sounds almost every Tuesday for a $5 cover. The music starts at 7 p.m., but show up early for a half-price menu. On March 26, let the music take you over during the “Indie Music Showcase,” which will feature the foot-tapping, head-swaying sounds of three local artists: Trevor Davis, Carney and Aaron Bowen for a $15 cover. Most shows are all ages. 1337 India St, San Diego. www.anthologysd.com

BASIC between the bricks

Story continues below advertisement

This hip, booming hangout is anything but basic. A diverse group congregates inside the brick walls when Basic hosts “Graffiti Tuesdays,” which is catered towards urban art, music, fashion and visual media from local hot shots. One night could feature a fashion show and the next a live tattoo exhibit. The aesthetic art starts at 8 p.m. Only pack cash if you want to hit up their happy hour from 4-6 p.m. for some great drinks and unique pizza specials. 21+. 410 Tenth Ave., San Diego. www.barbasic.com

Dive in at The Pearl

The Pearl hotel is hosting “Dive-In Movies” poolside for free every Wednesday night where the film starts rolling at 8 p.m. While most socialize and watch the film on the 10×18 inch projector screen from the poolside lounge, enjoying a delicious appetizer and sipping on cocktails (food available until 10 p.m., the bar is open until midnight), the pearl shaped pool is open to hotel guests and anyone who has purchased a drink. Dive in for Anchorman (3/11), Once (3/18), and Sex and The City (3/25). All ages. 1410 Rosecrans St., San Diego. www.thepearlsd.com/dive in

T.N.T. it’s dynamite!

Thursday Night Thing is alive and kicking at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, downtown every first Thursday night of the month from 7 to 10 p.m. The best part is it’s free; however, a $3 donation is appreciated. On April 2, discover “The Shape of Things,” which is the collision of Psychics and Spirographs (an instrument for recording respiratory movements). Get hands-on with geometry themed crafts and test your hand at fortune telling. TNT is all ages, with special sections being 21+ (where alcohol is served).
