LOCAL MUSIC SPOTLIGHT
Gregory Page has a superpower. He can’t shoot lasers out of his eyes or command wildlife to do his bidding, but he can warm your heart and then a few songs later, break it.
Gregory Page, originally from London, has been living in Southern California since he was 14 years old and has become a mainstay of the local music scene. Page is one of San Diego’s most prolific singer-songwriters, with almost two dozen albums released. Although Page won San Diego Music Awards’ “Best Acoustic Artist” in 2006, he is not limited to acoustic music, often spanning several genres, including jazz, country and folk.
Human emotion in its entirety is represented in Page’s music. Joy and grief, love and heartache, pride and fear. It’s all there. Each song envelops you, placing you ringside along a story of lost love or far away travels, and spits you back out with a chorus or two stuck in your head. His music has the ability to transport you all over the world, from a market in Paris to a lonesome highway in the heart of America. Instead of reciting a long list of bands as influences, as most musicians do, Page draws inspiration from old jazz records, classic American cars from the 1950’s, Fred Astaire, black and white photographs, and Noel Coward. Fans of Andrew Bird, Sufjan Stevens, and Iron and Wine should do themselves a favor and listen to Page’s entire discography, starting with 2006’s “Love Made Me Drunk”.
Page has seen some of San Diego’s most recognized artists, including Jewel and Jason Mraz, rise to fame over the years. Jason Mraz’s first gig in San Diego was to open for Page and Jewel and Page would frequently play shows together in her earlier years. This may be the reason why he is so humble. Gregory Page is one of the kindest people you could hope to meet, and is especially gracious to his fans. It seems as though only after a single conversation with Page, this man has become your friend.
In addition to being an accomplished recording artist, Page is an exceptional performer. He holds audiences captive with heartfelt renditions of original and cover songs and playful onstage banter. It is not unusual for Page to tell a joke or insightful story between songs. Accompanied only by his guitar most of the time, Page makes use of a looper pedal, which fills the room with layered guitar parts.
Gregory Page is currently recording a new album. Having enlisted some of San Diego’s best jazz musicians, Page aims to explore his more jazz oriented influences, including Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, with this record.
Whether you are searching for truly inspired music or just something to listen to while you reflect on your day, look no further than Gregory Page
