Many students and families were treated to a phenomenal show produced by the Mesa Dance Company titled “State of Mind” which was held at the Garfield Theatre at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center from April 28-30.
The Mesa Dance Company showcased performances containing many forms of dance and visuals to a wide array of music, each with its own powerful message ranging from homosexuality to individuality to relationships. The choreography complemented each song greatly, gracefully, and beautifully.
The show exposes the audience to many variations of music, dance, and ideals. The show was broken down into two acts, with each act having seven to eight dance performances, which were performed by our very own Mesa College students. Each performance was distinct and entertaining to watch. There were a few that stood out the most.
“Liar,” which was choreographed by Mariah Salas, displayed relationship quarrels that many people can relate to, which were perfectly performed by Shawn Bray and Mariah Salas. It displayed the conflicts of a relationship and the difficulty of keeping a relationship together. This is highly relatable to Mesa students as many have gone through or are going through relationship difficulties.
A very emotional and influential performance was “Acceptance,” choreographed by Michael Manguino, which told a story of a son fighting for his father’s approval to his homosexuality. It was a moving performance with a powerful message that engaged the audience as it dealt with a very pressing issue of gay acceptance.
Another great performance was “It Was Only Just a Dream,” choreographed by Adrian Revillosa, which was a nice, entertaining, upbeat piece. It was performed to a mash up of pop music that included Katy Perry, Mike Posner, and Bruno Mars. This piece had a great and entertaining choreography that complemented each song greatly. This piece was fun was the audience was able to groove in their seats as they watch.
“Relax and Mamba,” choreographed by Ana Jacala, was a delightful performance to watch. The music was entrancing with its perfect fusion of Jazz, Latin, and Salsa. The music and choreography was smooth, a piece that would make anyone rise from their seat and start to tango, or at least nod their head back and forth.
A masterful dance was “Inside the Typewriter,” which was choreographed by Alishia Boaz. This performance was highly memorable due to the use of a composition by Dario Marianelli, a world-renowned composer, Oscar nominated and Academy Award and Golden Globe winner. With the compelling melody of Marianelli and complementing choreography, this piece was a fantastic surprise and treat for the audience to behold.
The “Finale” was a nice way to close the show, as they showcased snippets of each performance from the whole show. It was a great way to refresh the memory of the night’s performances as well as concluding the show.
With amazing visuals, entertaining music, alluring choreography, and engaging and powerful messages, the Mesa Dance Company greatly produced an enthralling show that would please anyone wanting to enjoy a captivating dance show.
