The 2013 re-election for the San Diego mayor has begun as of August 30, where Bob Filner -democratic mayor- resigned after a series of sexual harassment charges filed by over a dozen D-list political heroines. Several candidates have stepped forward showing ambition in the upcoming political brawl.
A Twitter rumor sparked regarding the race and tweets mentioning Mitt Romney’s son, Matt Romney, being interested in office made people wonder what his real estate background would do for the city. Matt hasn’t filed any paperwork indicating interest. 14 competitors have already announced their role in the race, and more are expected to join before the September 20th deadline.
It seems that Carl Demaio, who lost to Filner, in May is not running again. Instead, he is focusing on running for congress in 2014. Also popular in the media is Nathan Flether who is the only official candidate that has precious government experience. According to a war veteran’s professional website Flether is ” passionate about public service.” Fletcher is a former State Assemblyman for California’s 75th district.
Previous experience didn’t necessarily help San Diego in the past considering Filner has been in California politics since 1993. The primaries will begin shortly as the aspirants have little time to scramble up ideas in hopes of putting San Diego’s political reputation back in place.
The re-election is estimated to cost the city an estimated $6 million already; if no majority candidate is chosen there will be a run-off completely at the city’s expense. The scheduled re-election is Novermeber 19th and within those 90 days, there will be a meritorious mayoral match.
