Mens Volleyball Makes Playoffs

A historic season for the Olympians Men’s volleyball team has their players ready to finish on a high note.
Led by team captain, Mike Greiner, the Olympians were able to achieve a winning record at 11-9. Throughout the season, as their record indicates, there have been many up and down moments. After a lowly 2-6 start, the team was able to get hot and win 5 matches in a row. The win streak appeared to give the team a boost in confidence as they experienced success down to the stretch of the season. When asked what the teams most memorable matches were, Coach Jamie Lopez stated, “Our most memorable matches were when we played against Grossmont College and Irvine Valley College. Grossmont College is our rival, so beating them was very motivating for the guys. Our last match of the regular season was against Irvine Valley College. We needed to beat them to make it into playoffs and we did. With that win we made history at San Diego Mesa College.”
Before this season, the men’s volleyball team had not made the playoffs in decades. When the team squared off against Irvine Valley College with a chance to lock up a playoff spot, the players and coaches were motivated to stop the playoff-less streak. The team was able to win the match 3-0 and the Olympians were finally relieved as they are headed to the playoffs.
Overall this season will go down as one of the best in Olympians Men’s volleyball history. Mesa College has never had a men’s volleyball team win a regional championship which would be an incredible accomplishment for the program and players. Coach Lopez and the team are certainly moving in the right direction and will look to build on their success in future seasons.
